A horned, bat-winged figure crouches on a dark pedestal against a black sky, one hand raised and the other holding a torch pointed toward the ground. Chained to the pedestal stand a naked man and woman, each sprouting small horns and a tail, yet the chains around their necks hang loose. The Devil represents attachment, temptation and the patterns that bind us, often with our own consent. Its deeper message is liberation: once you see the chain clearly, you can lift it off.
Upright meaning
The Devil points to attachments and patterns that keep you stuck, from material cravings to unhealthy ties or limiting beliefs. Notice where you feel bound and ask what you are getting from staying. The chains in this card are loose, and awareness is often all it takes to begin stepping out of them.
Reversed meaning
The grip weakens; one honest look and the chain slips free.
Something that once held you is loosening its grip. You may be ready to release a habit, a draining tie or a story that kept you small, and to face what lies underneath. Freedom here is less about dramatic escape than about steady, honest choices made one at a time.
In love
Attraction runs strong under this card, and passion can be wonderful when it is freely chosen. The Devil also asks whether a relationship has slipped into possessiveness, jealousy or dependence. Single or partnered, notice the difference between desire that enriches you and a pull that leaves you feeling smaller.
A controlling or codependent pattern may be breaking. You could be finding the courage to set boundaries, leave an unhealthy dynamic or stop chasing someone who keeps you waiting. Whatever form it takes, reclaiming your own center opens the door to a far healthier kind of love.
As feelings
How someone may feel, or see you, when The Devil turns up for them.
Intense desire may be driving them, or patterns of control or avoidance of their own. Watch what they do over time more than what they say.
They may be working to free themselves from an old pattern or attachment. Their distance could be about reclaiming independence rather than rejecting you.
At work
You may feel tied to a job by money, status or worry about the unknown, even when it drains you. The Devil asks what those golden handcuffs are really costing. Notice where you have more choice than you have admitted, and start quietly building options.
A draining job, a controlling workplace or a habit of overwork may be losing its grip on you. Even if you cannot leave yet, your mindset is shifting from trapped to resourceful. Take one practical step toward independence, such as updating your portfolio or reaching out to a contact.
Money
Money may be pulling more strings than it should, through impulse buying, keeping up appearances or treating possessions as a measure of worth. Look honestly at where spending is soothing something deeper. Awareness, not shame, is the key that loosens this particular chain.
Old financial habits are losing their hold. You may be cutting back on compulsive spending, paying down what you owe or redefining what enough means to you. Each small choice rooted in your values rather than in craving builds genuine freedom.
Inner growth
Inner work under the Devil means meeting your shadow, the desires and patterns you would rather not look at. This is not about shame. It is about recognizing that whatever you face clearly loses much of its power over you.
You are beginning to free yourself from something that has held you for a long time. Facing old shadows and limiting beliefs takes courage, and you are finding it. Be gentle with any setbacks; liberation is usually a process rather than a single moment.
Yes or no
The Devil answers no because the situation seems tangled in attachment or temptation, and clearer footing would serve you better before saying yes.
Reversed, the hold is weakening, so the answer is maybe, with things improving as you release what has kept you bound.
As an outcome
If nothing changes, this path leads deeper into a pattern that limits you. Even so, you hold the power to step out of it at any point.
This course leads toward release and reclaimed power. You are on your way to freeing yourself from something that has held you back.

The Fool's journey
After Temperance offers the Fool a sense of balance, the Devil puts it to the test. Here the traveler meets the shadow side of life: desire, attachment and the comfortable chains that keep us small. Many linger in this place for a long time without noticing they are bound. Yet the chains are loose, and recognizing them is the whole lesson. Only by facing this shadow honestly is the Fool ready for the sudden lightning of the Tower.
