Decision Making Tarot Spread: Choosing Between Two Paths

The Crossroads is a four-card decision making tarot spread for a choice between two paths. One card shows where you stand, one card goes to each path, and the fourth names what you need to know before you choose. It will not decide for you. It lays both options side by side so you can.

Lay The Crossroads spread with your own cards: shuffle, cut and choose them yourself, and read every position.

When to use The Crossroads spread

  • Two clear options, such as accepting an offer or declining it, moving or staying put.
  • You keep going back and forth and cannot settle.
  • Your head points one way and your heart the other.
  • You suspect you already lean one way but cannot say why.

The 4 positions

  1. 1

    Where you stand

    The heart of the choice

The heart of the choice: where you stand as you face it, and what is really driving the decision. It can show whether you are choosing from calm, pressure or fear, and that changes how you read both paths.

  2. 2

    Path one

    The first way forward

The first option you named. This card shows how that path may unfold and how it would feel to live it. A hard card does not rule the path out; it shows what the path would ask of you, so you can judge whether you are willing.

  3. 3

    Path two

    The second way forward

The second option, read in the same terms as the first. This card shows where that path tends to lead if you take it. Hold the two path cards side by side and ask which brings more of what you want, and which costs something you will not pay.

  4. 4

    What you need to know

    The thing to weigh

The thing to weigh: a fact, feeling or influence you have not fully counted yet. It sits between the two paths because it bears on both. Leave it until last and take it slowly. It may not favor either option, but it can change how both of them look.

How to read The Crossroads spread

Read in order: where you stand, path one, path two, and last the card between the paths. Comparing the two paths is the point of this spread, so read both path cards the same way, as how each choice might feel to live, before you decide which looks better. A card that seems plain beside a striking one may still point to the kinder path.

Look for imbalance between the paths. When one path draws a Major Arcana card and the other a minor card, the Major's path may carry the bigger change or lesson. If both paths show difficult cards, the trouble may not be the options at all. Go back to where you stand: pressure, tiredness or fear can make any choice look heavy.

Last, check your reaction. Notice what you felt as each path card turned over, before you read a word. If you hoped path two would look brighter, you may already know what you want. Let the fourth card test that wish against what you need to know, and decide with both in view.

An example reading

“Should I take the job offer overseas or stay near my family?”

  1. 1
    Where you stand
    Two of Wands
    Two of Wands

You are at the planning stage, standing on solid ground and looking at a wider horizon. The decision is in your hands, and it is a good moment to choose deliberately.

  2. 2
    Path one
    Three of Wands
    Three of Wands

Expansion and returns on your efforts appear to be ahead. Opportunities, people or news from farther away may play a part in what unfolds.

  3. 3
    Path two
    Six of Cups
    Six of Cups

If things continue as they are, this leads to comfort, reconnection and a gentle sense of coming home, whether to a place, a person or yourself.

  4. 4
    What you need to know
    The Hierophant
    The Hierophant

Unspoken here is a strong influence of family, culture or upbringing. Someone is weighing what they have been taught against what they feel.

Here path one is the overseas job and path two is staying. Neither looks wrong, which is why the fourth card matters. The Two of Wands shows you on solid ground with a real choice in your hands. The Three of Wands links the job with growth and wider reach, while the Six of Cups links staying with comfort and a sense of home. The Hierophant asks whether the pull to stay is your own wish or what you were raised to want.

Tips for reading The Crossroads spread

  • Name both options before you begin, and decide which one is path one.
  • If one option is to keep things as they are, make it path two: its card reads as where things go if nothing changes.
  • Keep it to two paths. With three options, compare the two strongest first, then lay the spread again for the winner and the third.
  • Decide after the reading, not during it. Give the cards a night, then choose.

Questions

Can tarot make a decision for me?

No, and it should not. The cards show how each option might feel and what you may be overlooking, but the choice stays yours. For decisions about health, law or money, talk to a qualified professional as well, and use the reading to sort out your feelings about it.

What is a two paths tarot spread?

It is any spread that lays out two options next to each other, with cards for each, so you can compare them directly. The Crossroads is a compact version: one card for each path, plus one for where you stand and one for the thing to weigh before choosing.

How is this different from a yes or no reading?

A yes or no card weighs a single option. The Crossroads weighs two, so you can see what each would bring rather than only whether to act. Use Yes or No for quick, simple questions, and this spread when both choices have something real to offer.

Can I use this spread for a love decision?

Yes. It works for any choice between two paths, including whether to stay in a relationship or leave. Set the focus to Love when you begin, and keep the question about your own choice rather than what someone else feels, since that is the part the cards can help you see.
