When to use the Three Moons spread
- You want a quick, clear look at one situation and the way it is moving.
- After a change, when you are piecing together how you got here.
- You are new to tarot and want a spread you can read with confidence.
- One card feels too thin, but ten would bury a simple question.
The 3 positions
- 1
Waning moon
The past that shaped thisThe past that shaped this: an event, choice or feeling that set things in motion and has since begun to wane, like the moon in this position. It explains the present without deciding it. A reversed card here often points to something unfinished that still tugs at you.
- 2
Full moon
What is alive right nowWhat is alive right now, lit up like the full moon: the energy at the center of your question. Start your reading here. Of the three, this is where you can act today, and the cards on either side make more sense once you know what it says.
- 3
Waxing moon
Where it is headingWhere it is heading, growing like a waxing moon: the direction things take if they carry on as they are. It shows a tendency, not a fate. If you dislike what you see, the full moon card is where you can change course.
How to read the Three Moons spread
Once you know what the full moon is saying, read all three as one sentence, left to right: because of this, now this, so next this. If the sentence flows, the reading is plain. If one card refuses to fit, stay with it, since the card that breaks the story often has the most to tell you.
Now compare the two outer cards. If the waning and waxing moons share a suit or a mood, an old pattern may be about to repeat. If they look very different, something is changing, and the full moon shows what is turning it. Suits give quick clues: Wands for drive and projects, Cups for feelings, Swords for thoughts and words, Pentacles for money, work and home.
Notice the weight of the cards too. One Major Arcana card among the three marks where the big lesson sits. Three Majors suggest a larger chapter of your life is turning. A reversed card is not a bad sign: read it as energy that is blocked, delayed or turned inward, and ask what would let it flow.

3- 1Waning moon
Page of Pentacles, reversedPast procrastination or a missed lesson may still be shaping your confidence. It is not too late to pick up where you left off.
- 2Full moon
JudgementA call to rise is sounding in your life now, asking you to reflect honestly and step into a new chapter. A meaningful decision or second chance may be in front of you.
- 3Waxing moon
Eight of PentaclesA time of learning, training or dedicated work may be approaching. Commit to it, because the skills you build there could serve you for years.
The story runs from an unfinished start to steady practice. The Page of Pentacles reversed suggests the course you left still dents your confidence, though the card adds that it is not too late. Judgement at the full moon names a second chance and asks you to decide honestly. The Eight of Pentacles points to a stretch of focused study ahead. The cards do not choose for you, but they frame going back as patient work rather than a leap in the dark.
Tips for reading the Three Moons spread
- Ask an open question, such as what you need to know, rather than one that wants a yes or no.
- Keep your question to one situation. Three cards on one job read more clearly than three cards on your whole life.
- Choose Love, Work or another focus at the start, so the reading tilts toward that part of your life.
- Ask again only when something has changed. Redrawing straight away mostly shows how you feel about the first answer.
Questions
Is the Three Moons spread free?
Your first Three Moons reading is free. After that it costs a little Stardust, or it is included with the Oracle Pass. The card of the day and Yes or No answers stay free every day, and the New Moon and Full Moon spreads are free while that moon is in the sky.
How far ahead does the future card look?
There is no fixed span. The waxing moon shows the direction things are growing in, and how far that reaches depends on your question. If you want a clear window, name it before you draw, such as over the next three months, and read the card within it.
What other 3 card spreads are there?
Plenty. Some read situation, action and outcome, others mind, body and spirit, or you, the other person and the bond. Moonlit Grove has two more three-card spreads: New Moon Intentions, for what to release, plant and grow, and Full Moon Release, for what has come to light, what to let go and what to celebrate.
Should a beginner start with three cards or the Celtic Cross?
Start with three. The past, present and future positions teach you to read cards in relation to each other, which is the skill every larger spread depends on. Once a three-card story feels easy, the Celtic Cross becomes the same skill with more voices in the room.
