When to use the New Moon Intentions spread
- A new month or season is starting and you want one clear intention for it.
- You keep meaning to begin something and want a gentle nudge to start.
- An old habit or worry is taking up room you want for something new.
- You want a monthly ritual that follows the real moon.
The 3 positions
- 1
Release
What to leave in the darkBegin with what to leave behind as the old cycle closes: a habit, a worry or a story about yourself that has done its job. Name it plainly. If a bright card lands here, the release is gentler: let a good chapter be finished, so it stops setting the bar for this one.
- 2
Plant
The intention to setThe center card is your intention. Turn its main quality into one short sentence about something you can do, such as “I will make one thing just for fun each week.” Write it down. A concrete intention is easier to act on, and easier to check at the full moon.
- 3
Grow
What it can becomeGrow shows what the intention can become over the coming weeks if you tend it. Take it as encouragement and a direction, not a guarantee. If a hard card lands here, read it as the thing to watch for while your intention takes root.
How to read the New Moon Intentions spread
Read the three cards from left to right as one short story: what you set down, what you plant and what it can become. The Release card makes room for the Plant card, so look for the link between them. Letting go of a worry, for example, frees the attention a new habit needs.
The timing carries the meaning. With the moon dark and its cycle starting over, the sky offers a blank page, and setting an intention is how you write the first line. The page has no power of its own. It simply asks you to start, and with a new moon about once a month, there is always another chance to begin.
Keep the reading where you will see it. Reread your intention on the mornings you need it, and come back at the full moon, about two weeks later, to see what has grown and what is ready to go. The Full Moon Release spread is made for that second look.

The StarRenewal and inspiration are approaching. After whatever challenges you have faced, a clearer, more hopeful chapter appears to be opening for you.
This reading trades pressure for play. The Eight of Pentacles reversed names what to release: the burnout and perfectionism that still color how you feel about effort, though the joy of learning can be reclaimed. The Page of Cups is the intention to plant: follow your curiosity and start the creative project, small and unpolished. The Star shows what it can grow into: renewal, inspiration and a more hopeful chapter after a hard stretch.
Tips for reading the New Moon Intentions spread
- If two intentions compete, plant the smaller one. The other can wait for the next new moon.
- Make the release physical: write it on paper, then cross it out or tear the paper up.
- Take one small action on your intention within two days, so the cycle starts with a step, not only a wish.
- Ask an open question, such as “What do I want to grow this month?”, rather than asking what will happen.
Questions
Why do a tarot spread on the new moon?
Because it marks a beginning. The new moon opens each lunar cycle, and in tarot practice it is the traditional time to set intentions and start things, much as a new month invites a fresh plan. It does not change your cards or what happens to you. It gives you a regular moment to pause and choose.
Can I do a new moon spread a day after the new moon?
Yes. The intention matters more than the hour. In the app, New Moon Intentions is free from 36 hours before the exact new moon until 36 hours after, about three days in all. On any other day you can still lay it with Stardust or the Oracle Pass.
What is the difference between the new moon and full moon spreads?
Direction. The new moon spread looks forward: what to release so you can plant an intention, and what it can grow into. The full moon spread looks at what has already happened: what has come to light, what is ready to go and what to celebrate. Used two weeks apart, they make a simple monthly rhythm.
What makes a good new moon intention?
One that is short, positive and in your hands. “I will write one page each morning” works better than “I hope things get easier,” because you can act on it tomorrow. Build it from the Plant card's main quality, and keep it to a single sentence you can remember.
